Autumn 2013

Journal Entry: Sun Sep 29, 2013, 6:06 AM

some of you know the story i will tell, others do not, but i wanted to explain my long absence from DA.  it is a short story with a sad ending but now that the ending has been written, i am hoping and i made promises, that a new story would emerge in time...

16 months ago my husband was diagnosed with stage 4 kidney cancer of a type that had very little treatment available.  after months of brutal testing, he began a chemo therapy treatment that continued daily for 9 months before it stopped working.  tom decided to try the 2nd chemo drug that was available but the side effects of this daily dose of 'poison' was sucking the life from him day by day.  by mid july this year tom was no longer able to do the work he loved so much due to the horrific side effects.  his kidneys were shutting down and the cancer had spread.  now, he had it not only in his kidney and liver and lymph system as before, but it had taken his lungs hostage as well...the chemo was not working as hoped and tom said NO MORE!

we brought hospice into the house so tom's final days could be comfortable with the proper pain medications....friends came from all around to visit and he was happy to see and say goodbye to old friends.

our oldest son came home from NYC, having just begun graduate school there, and the 2 boys and i surrounded tom with love and care..never leaving him alone...

on august 17th, my wonderful husband tom, passed quietly into his next life, as we held his hands, kissed him and told him that we would somehow be ok as he traveled on.

i made promises that i would continue to work on my photographic art, develop my film, take my cameras out again, get the darkroom back in business after 16 months of absence..

we desperately miss tom but we also know that he is watching over us (he has been seen in the house once already...standing with our old dog, at the foot of my bed, and hummingbirds have suddenly become frequent visitors to tom's pond and actually come to light on his chair next to the pond!)...

our lives go on and i will eventually fulfill my promise to him and begin working in the darkroom again..

thanks to all who sent well wishes and support through the past year and more..

i am sorry for my lack of participation and i know i  have missed many wonderful images here over the past year.  i do hope to become more involved, at least watching and adding faves, now that my life is settling down..

peace and blessings,
